Bible Study: “Get Over Yourself”

by Misty Craig

Opening Scripture: “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” – Matthew 16:25

Introduction

The phrase “Get Over Yourself” might seem harsh at first, but it holds a deep truth when viewed through the lens of Scripture. In our journey of faith, God calls us to move beyond self-centered living and embrace a life centered on Him and others. Today, we will explore what it means to “get over yourself” in a biblical context and how doing so leads to true freedom, purpose, and joy.

Section 1: Recognizing the Problem – The Self-Focused Life

Key Scripture:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Philippians 2:3-4

  1. The Root of Self-Centeredness
  • Pride and selfish ambition often come from our desire to control, achieve, or be recognized.
  • Examples: The Pharisees in the Bible sought recognition for their works rather than a genuine relationship with God.

2. The Consequences of Self-Focus

  • Strained relationships, dissatisfaction, and a lack of spiritual growth.
  • When we put ourselves above others, we miss the opportunity to see God’s bigger plan.

Reflection Question:
In what areas of your life do you find yourself overly focused on your own desires or image?

Section 2: The Call to Deny Yourself

Key Scripture:
“Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’” – Luke 9:23

  1. What It Means to Deny Yourself
  • It’s not about neglecting self-care but rather surrendering our will to God’s purposes.
  • Jesus modeled this when He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

2. The Freedom in Letting Go

  • Letting go of selfishness allows God to fill us with His peace and joy.
  • When we trust God’s plan, we are freed from the pressure of striving for control.

Reflection Question:
What “cross” is God asking you to take up daily? How can you trust Him more in this process?

Section 3: Living for God and Others

Key Scripture:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Matthew 22:37-39

  1. The Joy of Serving Others
  • Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28).
  • Practical ways to serve: Volunteering, acts of kindness, and listening to others’ needs.

2. The Reward of Humility

  • Humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less.
  • God exalts the humble (James 4:10) and blesses those who seek to bless others.

Reflection Question:
How can you show love to God and others in your daily life?

Section 4: Living a Christ-Centered Life

Key Scripture:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” – Galatians 2:20

  1. The Shift from Self to Christ
  • True transformation happens when Christ becomes the center of our lives.
  • This involves daily surrender, prayer, and seeking God’s will in all we do.

2. The Impact of a Christ-Centered Life

  • A life lived for Christ inspires others and reflects His love to the world.
  • Example: The Apostle Paul’s life—he gave up everything to follow Christ.

Reflection Question:
What steps can you take to make Christ the center of your life today?

Conclusion: A Life Worth Living

“Getting over yourself” is not about losing your identity; it’s about finding your true purpose in Christ. By shifting our focus from self to God, we experience the abundant life Jesus promised. This week, challenge yourself to step out of self-centered habits and embrace humility, service, and surrender.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to get over ourselves and focus on You. Teach us to deny our selfish desires and live lives that reflect Your love and purpose. May we find true joy in serving You and others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge for the Week:
Identify one area where you can shift your focus from yourself to serving others or honoring God. Take one practical step to act on it.
