SMPBS#30: Enough For Today

Scripture:
2 Corinthians 12:9
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness…”

Devotion

There are seasons when faith does not feel loud.

It does not always feel like a breakthrough, a mountaintop, or a clear answer. Sometimes faith feels like sitting down at the piano with tired hands, trying to pull a melody out of a place that still feels quiet. Sometimes faith feels like opening Scripture again, even when your mind is tired and your heart does not know exactly what to say.

That is where this song came from.

Enough for Today was written from a place of feeling like I was in a holding pattern. I knew I was trying to follow the direction God had placed in front of me. I knew I was still walking toward what I believed He had called me to do. But emotionally, physically, and spiritually, I felt tired.

Over the last few years, there have been health struggles, heavy responsibilities, delays, disappointments, and arrows that seemed to come from every direction. I have tried to turn those arrows into something useful. I have tried to turn pain into purpose, pressure into prayer, and hard seasons into songs, studies, graphics, and reminders of God’s faithfulness.

But even when you are trying to do the right thing, you can still get tired.

That is why 2 Corinthians 12:9 speaks so deeply to this song.

Paul asked the Lord to remove what was troubling him. He did not ask once. He asked three times. And God’s answer was not, “I will remove it immediately.” His answer was:

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

That is not always the answer we hope for at first. We often want the mountain moved, the pressure lifted, the road opened, and the whole plan explained. We want to feel strong again. We want to feel clear again. We want to know that what we are doing is working.

But sometimes God does not give us the whole road.

Sometimes He gives us enough grace for the next step.

That kind of grace may not feel dramatic, but it is holy. It is the grace that helps you get up when you are weary. It is the mercy that meets you in the morning. It is the strength that carries you when your own strength has run thin. It is the quiet reminder that weakness is not failure when it brings you closer to dependence on God.

There are days when “victory” may not look like everything changing around you.

Sometimes victory looks like staying.

Sometimes it looks like praying again.

Sometimes it looks like reading one more verse, taking one more breath, writing one more line, or taking one more step.

The lyric says:

If all I have is one more step
then one more step is where I’ll stay
You don’t have to move the mountain
just give me enough for today

That is not a prayer of giving up.

That is a prayer of surrender.

It is saying, “Lord, I trust You even when I do not have the whole picture. I trust You even when I do not feel strong. I trust You to be enough when I am not.”

And that is where grace becomes personal.

God’s grace is not just a beautiful idea. It is not just something we talk about when life is easy. Grace is what meets us in weakness. Grace is what keeps us from being consumed. Grace is what holds us when we feel like we are only making it one day at a time.

If all you have today is one more step, that does not mean you have failed.

It may mean God is teaching you how to depend on Him for daily bread, daily mercy, and daily strength.

You may not feel like you have enough for the whole journey.

But through Christ, you can have enough for today.

Prayer

Lord,
I do not always feel strong, but I know You are near me.

When I am tired, meet me with grace.
When I feel stuck, give me patience.
When I feel weak, remind me that Your strength is made perfect there.

Help me stop demanding the whole road when You are giving me enough light for the next step. Teach me to trust You in the quiet places, in the waiting places, and in the days that feel ordinary and hard.

I do not need to have everything figured out today.
I just need You.

Give me enough mercy for this morning, enough strength for this moment, and enough grace for one more step.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Reflection

  • Where do I feel like I am only making it one day at a time?
  • What weakness have I been treating like failure instead of a place where God can meet me?
  • What would it look like to ask God for enough grace for today instead of demanding the whole road at once?

Song Connection

Enough for Today is a song about quiet endurance, daily grace, and learning to trust God when the journey feels slow, heavy, or unclear. It is for the person who may not feel victorious yet, but is still choosing to stay close to God one step at a time.
